A woman shot her brother in the shoulder Friday after a 10-month-old baby choked on a mint during movie night at a south Houston home, police said.

The sibling dispute was triggered around 8:45 p.m. when the sister's 10 or 11-year-old daughter gave the brother's baby the candy, Houston police Lt. Ronnie Wilkins said. The siblings were at their mother's house at the time, he said.

Houston police are investigating after a woman shot her brother Friday during movie night at a south Houston home.

At some point, the baby began choking on the mint, Wilkins said. As the child gasped for air, another family member at the home started patting it on the back and doing medical procedures until eventually, the baby stopped choking, the lieutenant said.

After the choking incident, the baby's father became "very upset" and started yelling at his sister's daughter, Wilkins said. Due to tempers flaring, a "large fight erupted," he said.

"There was a couple fights that broke out," the lieutenant said. "The final fight was between the mother of the little girl and the father of the baby."

Before a firearm was pulled, Mace was involved in the altercation between the siblings, Wilkins said. An actual physical fight also ensued between the siblings, he said.

"They both were on the ground physically fighting," Wilkins said.

Once the physical fight was broken up, the sister walked to her vehicle, grabbed a pistol, went back into her mother's home and shot her brother, according to Wilkins.

The sister was taken into custody and her brother is expected to live. "Everybody is cooperating at this time," Wilkins said.

It's unclear what charges, if any, the sister will face in relation to the shooting.

"It's up to the DA's Office and investigators to figure out where this ends up," Wilkins said.
