Tasting Pride: Hue can't beat these colorful treats!

Jan 06, 2024

Pride Month goeth before a fall (of your summer beach bod diet) if you’re not careful because predictably, Orlando's fun food and drink purveyors are coming out colorful and delicious, just like they do every year. By the time this little roster drops, your social feeds will likely be Technicolor with treats. Add these delights to your rainbow roundup for consumption as you eat and drink your way through June.

This one features chef/partner Stephanie Krupp's signature choux dough with sweet, crunchy craquelin that's filled with a scratch-made Fruity Pebbles-infused pastry cream. And since this Winter Park bakery is seriously full of pride, fans can enjoy it all summer long.

"This puff tastes just like you’re having a bowl of Fruity Pebbles on a Saturday morning," says Krupp, who adds that the childhood-memory feels are off the charts. Pick them up in-store or order ahead of time.

"Pride Month is important to us because we all have family, friends and co-workers who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and we want to joyfully celebrate everyone."

"True Colors is a sparkling wine with a message," says advanced sommelier Melissa McAvoy, owner of this SoDo wine bar. "Love is sparkling and social."

What better way to toast positive inclusivity and love than with a Spanish sparkler that's 41% Parellada, 27% Xarel-lo, 23% Macabeo and 9% Chardonnay aged on lees for 14 months? (This is the process of letting white and sparkling wines mature and age on top of spent yeast and other particulate matter.) For every bottle sold in the U.S., a donation is made to organizations that help support the LGBTQ Community.

Best Wine Bar: 2023 Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards

"This Cava is bursting with ROYGBIV," says McAvoy. "The aromas of red apple skins, oranges, yellow pears, and green mangoes give a brightness on the palate that invokes a vision of love."

Swirlery will be offering this pour-by-the-glass all month long and featuring the bottle to go for $22.

"We will be donating $2 from each bottle to The Center Orlando, here in our local community. This wine is a super giver and we want you to be part of the toast."

They’re doing triple duty right now at The Glass Knife in Winter Park, since the start of Pride Month coincides with National Doughnut Day, but the champs here can handle it. And for the former, it's a double delight.

The Pride Croissant ($7), available every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of June, seems a modern marvel of bakery engineering with intricate sheeting of imported butter and yeast-leavened dough creating interior layers of rainbow accents that highlight decadent marshmallow cream.

Also laden with marshmallowy goodness, moist vanilla cake surrounds the creamy and colorful heart of the whimsical Pride Snack Cake ($7.50), which comes coated in decadent white chocolate. This one will be available June 3-11.

"Parlor Kitchen is a proud ally for LGBTQIA+ community," says Ryan Whaley, chef/owner of this popular local food truck. He's known for coming up with all kinds of tasty themed creations and this one, he says, "is every bit as unique as you or I."

The flavor: strawberry sugar. The color: all of them! This cookie, available for pre-order at $25 a dozen, showcases the rainbow hues that go hand-and-hand with the happy feels of the month. Wanna ship ’em to your favorite people? Whaley can do that, too, for an additional $10 per two dozen.

Preorder is from June 1-11 with a pickup date of June 15, from 2-7 p.m. at Uncommon Catering (2942 Curry Ford Road in Orlando).

"We all want to be heard, understood, loved and appreciated," says Whaley. "Everyone is different. Everyone has something to bring to the room. You are you, so be PROUD AF."
