European chocolate shop is sweet addition to San Diego

Apr 05, 2023

Dallmann Confections, an online shop of handcrafted chocolates based in San Diego, is making delicious delicacies by combining old world traditions with modern touches.

"I’m using my grandfather's and father's recipes, and very old school techniques," said owner Isabella Knack. "Everything is still handmade like in Europe. And like the U.S., we dare to think outside of the box."

The family's original chocolate business dates back to 1954, when Knack's grandfather opened a small pastry shop in St. Gilgen, Austria.

Knack paid homage to her family's legacy when she launched her own company selling European chocolates with a modern twist.

She opened her first storefront in Del Mar in 2011, but moved the business online during the pandemic. Dallman chocolates can also be found at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa and the U.S. Grant.

The company's tasty treats are made daily and range from classic milk chocolates, to their best-selling vegan, and dairy- and sugar-free truffles. They’re packed in build-your-own boxes of nine, 16, 25, 50 and 63 pieces. Subscriptions are also available.

Exquisite and unique creations are on the menu, with more than 40 flavors like yuzu, rosewater and coconut curry topped with an artistic design.

European classics like the Mozartkugel — a ball of pistachio marzipan covered in a layer of nougat — are also in the lineup.

Father's Day boxes, seasonal flavors like s’mores, citrus, popcorn, and Southern California-inspired ingredients like berries are planned for the summer.

In June, the shop will celebrate Pride Month by donating proceeds to a nonprofit that educates children in the LGBTQ communty.
